Compost Heater

This is not really a new idea, but a new application for our home. We keep several (3-4) cats (mostly strays that volunteer to eat the food we put out) in our back yard. We also have a large composting bin. The idea would be to use the waste heat from the compost to heat the pet house all winter. This is also a solution to another problem. We plan to use vermicompost for our raw kitchen waste. However, the worms used in vermicomposting will be dormant in the winter and cannot be exposed to winter conditions by the adding of new kitchen waste. So, diverting kitchen waste to the compost pile, where this nitrogen rich material will create hot compost just might be the answer.
